Giving students every advantage

Haileybury International

Haileybury is Australia’s most internationally engaged school. It provides its staff and students with an abundance of international experiences that have been designed to further enhance their personal, academic and professional development. International trips and exchanges are designed to encompass a wide range of experiences for academic, social justice, musical, cultural, historical and sporting purposes.

Haileybury has also been successfully engaged in the delivery of Australian education overseas for twenty years.

In 2013 Haileybury International School Tianjin opened just outside of Beijing, China.

The School now operates as the Haileybury Senior School Tianjin and has a Junior and Middle School partner in the Tianjin Haileybury Elite School. Haileybury Senior School Tianjin delivers the VCE and the GaoKao curriculum to students in Years 10 to 12. The Tianjin Haileybury Elite School is a boarding school for Junior and Middle School students.

Tianjin

Haileybury Schools, Tianjin, are two private schools sharing a campus - a Chinese Compulsory Curriculum Junior School (Years 1-9) called Tianjin Haileybury Elite School (THES), and Haileybury Senior School Tianjin (HSST) for the post-compulsory school years (10-12). HSST delivers the Gaokao and the VCE. The Schools have a strong relationship with Haileybury Melbourne. Staff from both schools in China and Haileybury Melbourne share in mutual training and improvement of teaching skills, and there are extensive opportunities for student engagement and exchanges. Haileybury Melbourne and the Haileybury Tianjin Schools work hard to build strong education programs which build mutual understanding and have a shared benefit.

China VCE programs

Haileybury pioneered the VCE in China in the early 2000s and now successfully delivers VCE programs to local students in selected schools in Qingdao, Chengdu, Ningbo, Wuhan, Luoyang, Sanshui, Lianyungang and Anqing. The VCE in China offers pathways to universities in Australia and globally. Our teachers work closely with their Chinese colleagues to ensure that the VCE is delivered at a high standard. Haileybury staff regularly join with their international colleagues online and at in-person Professional Learning Conferences to work on further improvements to the program.

Timor-Leste

Haileybury has a strong and long-standing association with the Dili International School. As well as helping with the implementation of the Australian VCE curriculum, Haileybury's Year 11 Student Leaders have often visited the school in Timor-Leste as part of our Social Justice Program. Timor-Leste holds a special place in Haileybury's heart with all staff and students enjoying the time spent at the International School and with its students.

The Philippines

Haileybury has delivered the VCE in the Philippines since 2016 in partnership with the Australian International School, Manila which offers pathways to universities in Australia and globally. Our teachers work closely with the local teachers to ensure the VCE is delivered at a high standard. The School runs a Northern Hemisphere timetable with offshore VCE graduation in June and classes are a mixture of local and ex-pat students.

Japan

Haileybury has had a long association with Japan. The School operates a student exchange program with the Nichidai High School in Sapporo, Japan. This partnership was established in 1997 and has continued to flourish. Senior School students studying Japanese are exposed to the language on a whole new level as well as having the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture.

Turkey

Gallipoli holds a special place in all Australians’ hearts. Haileybury prefects have on several occasions been presented with an opportunity to travel to Turkey to represent the School at the Acts of Remembrance in Gallipoli.

France

Haileybury has a strong French Language Program that has been aided by the exchange program setup with the Lycee de l’Assomption in Bordeaux and the Lycee de Georges Duby in Luynes. Year 11 students have the opportunity to travel to France to enhance their language skills and brush up on their French cooking, while taking in the sights and sounds of Paris and the French countryside. Students stay with local families and attend classes with their new French classmates. Over the course of the year, French students visit Haileybury on cultural exchange.

England

There are a number of opportunities available to students in England.

It is only fitting that Haileybury Australia has a partnership with its ancestor, Haileybury England (the founding Headmaster of Haileybury in Melbourne, Charles Rendall, was an alumnus of Haileybury England). A Year 12 student is selected each year to spend up to a month in the English country town of Hertford where they attend classes with their fellow English Haileyburians. A range of other sporting and music exchanges (such as an Organ Scholar Exchange) and academic partnerships are being developed between the Haileybury schools in England and Australia.

USA

Every three years the Music Department sends a selected group of students to tour the United States of America. During the trip, students are exposed to other musicians from various schools and gain valuable performance experience. As well as the tour a Gary Burton Scholarship is granted to one Music student every year who is then invited to Boston for a few weeks to further enhance their music skills.

Adventourous and Expedition Travel

Students have the opportunity to sign up to adventurous travel opportunities most years. As a small sample of recent trips, students who have travelled to Ecuador and spent time scaling volcanoes, braving the Amazon, frolicking with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands, tasting authentic Ecuadorian foods and working with local communities. Other adventurous international trips have included Antarctica, where, Haileybury students had the opportunity of a lifetime to undertake a 10-day expedition. Some highlights of the expedition included visiting Paulet Island, which is home to 100,000 Adelie penguins; seeing Neko Harbour where they climbed along a glacier; the Ukrainian Vernadsky Station, where the hole in the ozone layer was discovered; and Primavera and the Argentinian research base. Students were also thrilled to experience the Antarctic Channel and Weddel Sea, where they were lucky to view the giant tabular icebergs.

Other adventurous expeditions are in preparation.

Papua New Guinea

The Kokoda Track holds a special place in Australia's heart. Senior School students have participated a number of times in a special expedition to Papua New Guinea during a term break during which they hike sections of the Track. Many students choose to undertake the expedition as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Haileybury has also participated in Professional Learning Programs with schools in PNG, and is preparing to launch a VCE program in Port Moresby.

Vietnam

Haileybury works in partnership with the Einstein School in Ho Chi Minh City to deliver a Year 10-12 VCE program to local students who wish to pursue a tertiary pathway internationally. This is Haileybury’s first collaborative project in Vietnam, and indeed the first VCE program to be delivered in this country.

Vanuatu

Teachers and students in Port Vila, Vanuatu, are discovering the Australian education system and gaining valuable skills and career options thanks to a new partnership between Freedom School and Haileybury. Education experts from Haileybury are mentoring teachers in the Port Vila school to help them deliver a comprehensive Senior Secondary program. A further program delivering the VCE will start in Vanuatu in 2024.

Indonesia

Haileybury will begin the delivery of the VCE in Indonesia in 2024. Initially centred on Bandung, several further programs are in preparation across Java, and include the first international Haileybury Early Learning programs with a number of new partner organisations.
