More than just a list of dates
Since 1892, when our doors first opened with five staff and 17 students in attendance, Haileybury has been a centre of continual development: learning, teaching and location have all undergone transformative change on our path to becoming the school we are today.
We’ve seen out two wars, numerous conflicts and many Prime Ministers, opened new campuses across Australia and overseas, and our teachers have shaped a life of learning for thousands of students. But we’ve only ever had one purpose: to be a great world school.
Here’s a summary of our journey so far:
Haileybury School is founded by Charles Rendall (a graduate of Haileybury College in England), with 17 students.
The first student enrolled, Barney Allen, goes on to become Master of Classics at the University of Melbourne.
Our first cricket premiership is won (the first of four in a row).
The Old Haileyburians Association is founded.
Enrolments reach 70.
Enrolments reach 100.
Louis Berthon becomes the second Headmaster.
First football premiership.
Sydney Dickinson becomes the third Headmaster.
Enrolments reach 160.
Classes commence at the new Castlefield property.
Prime Minister Robert Menzies opens new buildings at Castlefield.
Sholto Black becomes the fourth Headmaster.
Future Olympian John Marshall leads the swimming team to the premiership.
Old Haileyburian Wilfred Fullagar is appointed to the High Court of Australia.
David Bradshaw becomes the fifth Headmaster.
Pipes and Drums band is formally established.
Haileybury joins the APS.
Purchase of the Keysborough land.
Prime Minister Robert Menzies opens new buildings at Keysborough where Years 7 and 8 commence.
Senior School begins at Keysborough.
Michael Aikman becomes the sixth Headmaster.
Newlands is opened on the Keysborough site.
Land at Berwick is purchased.
Edrington campus opens in Berwick.
Haileybury celebrates its centenary.
Robert Pargetter becomes the seventh Principal.
The parallel education model is adopted at Haileybury and girls commence in the Junior School.
Enrolments reach 2,000.
Girls commence in the Senior School and Haileybury Girls College is formally established.
Senior School expands to the Berwick and Brighton campuses.
Derek Scott becomes the School’s eighth Principal.
Haileybury celebrates 120 years with a ball at the National Gallery of Victoria.
Haileybury International School Tianjin Opens.
Enrolments reach 3,600.
The School purchases 383 King Street in Melbourne's CBD as the site for its fifth campus.
Haileybury City Early Learning Centre opens.
Haileybury City opens and the School celebrates its quasquicentennial (125th) anniversary.
Haileybury Rendall School opens in Darwin.
Haileybury is named Australian School of the Year at the Australian Education Awards.
Derek Scott is named Australian Principal of the Year at the 2019 Australian Education Awards.
Deputy Principal (Junior School), Grenville Green is named Primary School Principal of the Year (Non-Government) at the 2020 Australian Education Awards.
